The expansion of the power grid is central to the energy transition. At the same time, the German Federal Nature Conservation Act (§ 39 BNatSchG) and the EU Birds Directive protect breeding birds from March to September.
For Omexom, one of the leading service providers for energy infrastructure in Germany, this raised a critical question: How can we monitor 140 power pylons along a 60-kilometer 380 kV line in the Weser Uplands so closely that both nature conservation and project progress are equally ensured? Early detection of nesting activity prevents unplanned project delays.
The approach: Fully automated inspection with AI support.
Five strategically positioned DJI Dock 2 systems monitor the entire route fully automatically every two days. The dock-based drones launch autonomously, fly defined routes beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), and upload captured image data directly to the cloud. BVLOS operations are enabled by U-ROB EasyDock software.
FlyNex acts as the central orchestration platform, seamlessly connecting all subprocesses—from inspection planning through data acquisition to the final report.
FlyNex Vision AI was individually trained with project data to identify potential nest locations in real time. During the construction phase, the image data is continuously used for training.
The result: Measurable efficiency gains.
