The energy transition presents transmission system operators with immense challenges: while the power grid must be continuously expanded, maintenance demands for existing infrastructure are simultaneously rising exponentially. Traditional inspection methods are reaching their limits in the face of skills shortages and a growing grid. A leading energy provider, together with FlyNex, has developed an innovative solution that combines drone technology and artificial intelligence to revolutionise inspection processes. How exactly? Read the use case below.

Our Energy Sector Client Drives the Energy Transition with Drones and the FlyNex Platform

Challenge: Increasing inspection effort
Mastering the energy transition sounds simple in theory but poses practical challenges for our client. In the coming years, the transmission grid must be further expanded—on the one hand, to prevent electricity from wind and solar exceeding grid capacity; on the other, to ensure long-distance power transmission to major consumption centres. At the same time, the growing need for maintenance and repair of existing infrastructure cannot be neglected. Given the intensifying shortage of skilled workers, an efficient solution was needed to address these challenges going forward.

Solution: Digitalisation and Automation of Processes

In collaboration with FlyNex, we developed digital and semi-automated processes for tower and line inspections. By deploying drones, high-quality imagery can be captured automatically and then analysed using artificial intelligence. This significantly increases inspection capacity and enables early detection of damage. In addition, the entire inspection process is far more resource-efficient compared to conventional methods. To map the full process with all individual requirements, the company relies on the FlyNex platform.

Result: More Towers Inspected in Less Time

Automated drone flights over towers and lines have delivered positive outcomes for the transmission system operator. The (semi-)automated use of drones enables faster and more precise data acquisition, leading to improved maintenance and upkeep of infrastructure. This enhances grid safety and ensures smooth operation of the transmission network to meet the growing demands of the energy transition. The FlyNex platform plays a crucial role in building and executing efficient processes, capturing every step and integrating key functions such as regulatory checks.

Drones are increasingly used to supplement helicopters and climbers for network inspection. In the process, overhead line masts are flown over by drone to, for example, detect insulators' damage and check the mast for stability. But what happens afterward with the drone recordings, and how can drone data be used for more efficient inspection processes?
